Ghost Island
In 2013 researchers went looking for Sandy Island in the Coral Sea, east of Australia. Scientific databases showed the island to be about the size of Manhattan. Discovered in 1876 by a whaling ship, Sandy Island has been included on maps for more than a century, including, obviously, on Google Earth. When the Australian scientists arrived at the location, the only thing they found was open ocean. There was no other island that could have possibly been Sandy in sight. It just wasn’t there. So what happened to it? Did it sink beneath the waves? Was it just a figment of our imagination? It's possible that what the whaling ship had seen was a pumice raft, a floating raft of frothy light rock produced by volcanoes that can float around for years before breaking up. The island had gained so much fame it actually had an obituary published for it in April 2013. In it the researchers explained how the phantom island could have remained in geographical mind and maps due to human error. This "undiscovery" made headlines around the world and reminds us that despite modern technology, there are still mysteries to be solved in the ocean. Google and National Geographic quickly removed Sandy Island from their maps.
Pentagram
One thing's for sure, this is no crop circle or accident, this pentagram was placed there on purpose. Located in Kazakhstan, this is sure to lead any suspicious mind to the devil’s door. The 5-pointed star surrounded by a circle measures 1,200 feet (366m) in diameter. Located on the shore of a desolate lake, the pentagram shows up crystal clear on Google Maps if you wanted to look it up yourself. When the image first rose from the underworld to the internet, many were quick to link it, and Google, to devil worship. The pentagram is an ancient symbol used by many cultures and is not always satanic. It turns out that it is simply a park. Archaeologist Emma Usmanova has worked in the region for years and explained that its pathways were purposefully designed to create the shape of a star. The star is marked by roads lined with trees, making the shape stand out. The star was a popular symbol during the Soviet Union and many guessed that the site may have been an abandoned Soviet campground.
Desert Spiral
Google maps has frozen this double spiral in time. When people first saw the formation located in the Egyptian desert near the coast of the Red Sea, all kinds of theories arose. Crop circle, alien message, even a portal to an alternate universe. It’s too large and perfectly designed to have been created by any one person. Well, it was actually created by three women. Known as the Desert Breath, it is a super sized art installation created by DAST Arteam, a trio of Greek artists in March of 2007. The piece covers an area of about 10 hectares (25 acres). According to the artists it’s meant to "celebrate the desert as a state of mind, a landscape for the mind.” The spiral is made up of cones made from sand and is subject to natural erosion. Over time it will disappear and become part of the desert plain once more.
Syrian Holes
Images of the current civil war in Syria is by no means new to the internet. While the destruction on a human level has been caught by photographers and news coverage, satellites have also recorded the damage to hundreds of archaeological sites. All six of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, which are considered widely to be one of the oldest occupied areas on Earth have been damaged or destroyed. You can see the destruction for yourself if you were to look up Apamea via Google Earth. The location of the ancient Roman city is now a sea of pockmarked holes stretching over the entire area, left by looters since the start of the wr. Looters and treasure hunters have dug over 4000 holes looking for uncovered treasures to sell on the black market to finance the wr. These holes are about 2-3 meters across and in some cases are used to store weapons.
Airplane Graveyard
This might be one of the biggest, and coolest, graveyards you ever see. Located in Tucson, Arizona, the Davis Monthan Air Force Base is where U.S. military planes often find their final resting place. The cemetery stretches 2,600 acres and has been nicknamed “The Boneyard.” While the site is closed to the general public, modern day technology holds nothing sacred, not even the dead, and images of it are available for all to see on Google Earth (and other interactive maps). And it is something to see indeed.

9. An Ancient Computer
Recovered in the early 1900s by Greek divers, the Antikythera mechanism was found inside a Roman shipwreck near the Greek island of the same name. It is believed to the earliest form of a computer that is at least 2,000 years old. This complex clock-like device was used by ancient Greeks to calculate the movement of the stars and planets. The mechanism was composed of at least 30 different bronze gears and the whole thing was housed in a wooden frame that was decorated with thousands of characters. As so much of this period of history's technology has been lost, such advanced use of technology did not reappear in European historical artifacts until the 14th Century. It is now on display at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The history of this device is shrouded in mystery. It is unclear how this intricate device ended up in the hands of Romans, but some believe the ill-fated ship was transferring a woman of importance to be married in Rome. The mechanism, among other impressive riches on board, may have been a wedding gift from her family.
8. Baltic Sea Anomaly
The Baltic Sea Anomaly was accidently discovered by a team of diving experts and treasure hunters from the Ocean X Team in 2011. The divers found a circular object with a diameter of about 160 feet that appeared in a sonar image as it sat on the sea bottom. It looks like the “Millennium Falcon” from “Star Wars”, and has an architectural structure similar to Stonehenge in Britain. Oddly enough, all of the divers’ electrical equipment stopped functioning within 650 feet of the entity and it emits a strong radio signal. Some say it could be a pre-Ice Age artifact or a German anti-submarine device. A long track seems to lead towards the thing which makes people think it is some kind of landing strip. The Swedes finally managed to organize an expedition finally in 2012. The very first shots of the object at close range showed that it is unlikely it had ever flown. It seems that it is not a “flying saucer”, but rather a kind of construction. The most probable theory was provided by Volker Bryuherta from Stockholm University. According to him, it’s just a rock. Since the Baltic Sea came under the influence of melting glaciers, these rocks probably formed at the same time. But this does not explain why satellite phones and cameras stop working near this “rock”. Though various scientists have offered innumerable suggestions about the entity’s origins, the Baltic Sea anomaly still remains one of the unsolved intrigues and ocean mysteries of the world.
7. The Bimini Road
The Bimini Road, sometimes called the Bimini Wall, is an underwater rock formation near North Bimini island in the Bahamas. Researchers, geologists, archaeologists, and scientists alike have visited and studied the huge, flat stones off the coast of Bimini, known as the Bimini Road . They have tried for years to discern whether the limestone blocks are a natural phenomenon, or evidence of an ancient lost civilization. About 20 feet down in the clear blue water, is a stone path. Most people think it's a road made up of limestone blocks that's about half a mile long, but no one knows where it goes or what its purpose might have been. The stone blocks are huge and some are about 13 feet long. An American expedition in 2004 discovered a second and third layer of stone blocks which also suggests a wall of some sort although they weren't able to get to the bottom. Some people think that this might be proof of the location for the lost city of Atlantis.
6. Emeralds
Amateur diver and treasure hunter Jay Miscovish walked into a bar in Key West and bought a treasure map from a diver friend at a bar in 2010. He went on to discover more than 10,000 emeralds off the coast of Florida, making it one of the largest discoveries of sunken treasure in history. His company claimed that they had found over 154 pounds of emeralds, amethysts, and other stones lying on the ocean floor. Journalists from CBS news when to interview him and he poured out a laundry basked full of emeralds and told them that they likely came from an ancient shipwreck. The story earned him mass media attention but he refused to give out more information about the map and the man who had sold it to him, claiming he had paid him $50,000 to give up all rights to the treasure. Camera crews went with him on a dive and they also found emeralds and amethysts lying on the ocean floor but no hint as to the actual vessel that may have been transporting them.

10. Roman Coins
Detectorists spend most of their time searching fields and coming up empty, but occasionally they’ll find something that makes it all worthwhile. This is what happened to Dave Crisp, a hospital administrator. In 2010, he made an amazing discovery in a field near Frome, in the county of Somerset in England.
Expecting to find the usual discarded metal objects, he started digging on a spot where his detector had signalled a strong reading, and to his surprise, he uncovered a large pot that contained a hoard of Roman coins. In total there were over 52,000 of them! 766 bore an image of Marcus Aurelius Carausius, who ruled over Britain between 286 and 293 AD. As the first leader to strike coins in the country, this was a particularly important find- one that was valued at over 1 million dollars. The coins were sent to the British museum where they were cleaned by archaeologists and put on display.

9. The Mojave Nugget
While you may think that the gold in the California hills is long gone, this story shows that it’s still out there for those who look hard enough.
In 1977, Ty Paulsen was using his metal detector in the Mojave Desert in Southern California when he discovered something people always dream of- a huge golden nugget. It turned out to be one of the largest ever found by a metal detector in the US, and weighed a massive 4.5 kg! Known as the Mojave Nugget, it was worth a whopping $200,000, and can now be seen on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Unsurprisingly, Paulsen has never revealed the exact location where found the nugget, but it’s thought to have been from the Stringer Mining District- an area that has been linked with large quantities of gold discovery over the years. Who knows, if you get out searching you might make the next big discovery there yourself!

8. Bullet in Dallas, Texas
It’s not just valuable treasure in monetary terms that can be found with a metal detector, as Richard H. Lester discovered in 1974. He was in Dallas, Texas, searching for hits on Dealey Plaza when he found a bullet fragment. Now, this may not seem too out of the ordinary in the US, but this location just so happened to be about 500 yards away from the Texas School Book Depository, the location thought to have been used by Lee Harvey Oswald when he shot JFK.
Lester kept the fragment for a number of years, but he handed it over to the FBI in 1976 as a part of ongoing investigations . They conducted tests on it, which they published the following year, and while the bullet had the same 4 grooves and right hand twist pattern as Oswald’s Mannlicher-Carcano, the lands were spaced further apart than they should have been- meaning it was unlikely from his gun. No-one suggested at the time that it could have been from a second gunman, but from a day out with his metal detector, Lester found himself in the middle of the greatest conspiracy ever.

7. Spanish Gold Chalice
You don’t have to be an expert to make an amazing find, all you need is commitment and hard work. Mike DeMar took a job as a diver with a treasure hunting firm when he was 20 years old. Sounds like a great job! They were searching the Florida Keys for treasure from a sunken Spanish ship, the Santa Margarita, that had sunk over 400 years ago. The efforts of the company, Blue Water Ventures, had been on-going since 1980, and they had just begun looking at a new site. Within a couple of months of working there, DeMar was underwater and his metal detector pinged. He dug a bit with his hands and found what initially seemed like a piece of rock, but on closer inspection turned out to be a Golden Chalice.
The ornate object, thought to be from around the time of the ship, at least 400 years old, was subsequently valued at over $1 million dollars- more than enough to warrant the rest of the day off and a toast of champagne with his new colleagues. The ship had sunk in a storm that scattered the debris in one direction, but another storm hit and scattered it all across the seabed. Following this discovery, Blue Water Ventures were confident that they’d make further finds- although as of yet they haven’t announced anything quite like the chalice.
